This guide walks you through adding new questions to your surveys, editing existing ones, and configuring question settings.

01

Adding a New Question

Basic Steps

  1. Open your survey in edit mode
  2. Click the Add Question button
  3. Select a question type from the menu
  4. Configure the question
  5. Click Save

Your new question appears at the bottom of the survey.

Question Type Selection

When you click "Add Question", you'll see all 9 types:

Text Input:

  • Text (short/long form)
  • Email (validated)
  • Phone (validated)
  • Number (numeric)
  • Date (calendar picker)

Selection:

  • Multiple Choice (select one)
  • Checkboxes (select multiple)
  • Rating (1-5 stars)
  • Yes/No (binary)

Learn more about each type in Question Types.

02

Configuring Questions

Question Text

The most important setting—what you're asking:

Best practices:

  • Be specific and clear
  • Avoid jargon or complex language
  • Keep it short (under 100 characters if possible)
  • Ask one thing per question

Examples:

❌ Bad: "Thoughts?" ✅ Good: "What could we improve?"

❌ Bad: "How was your experience with our staff and the cleanliness and the overall service?" ✅ Good: "How would you rate the friendliness of our staff?"

Required vs Optional

Toggle Required to make a question mandatory:

Required Questions (must be answered):

  • Main score question (NPS/CSAT/CES)
  • Critical information you need for every response
  • Qualification questions that affect survey flow

Optional Questions (can be skipped):

  • Open-ended text questions
  • Contact information (email/phone)
  • Detailed feedback questions
  • "Anything else?" type questions

Tip: Keep optional questions to a minimum. Every required question reduces completion rates.

Question Description (Help Text)

Add optional helper text below the question:

When to use:

  • Clarifying what you're asking
  • Providing examples
  • Explaining why you need the information

Example:

Question: "Which service did you receive?" Description: "Select the main service from your appointment today"

Placeholder Text

For text/email/phone/number questions, add placeholder text that appears in the empty field:

Examples:

  • Text: "Share your thoughts here..."
  • Email: "your.email@example.com"
  • Phone: "(555) 123-4567"
  • Number: "e.g., 5"
03

Type-Specific Configuration

After selecting "Multiple Choice":

  1. Add Options:

    • Click "Add Option"
    • Type the option text
    • Click "Add" or press Enter
    • Repeat for each option (minimum 2)
  2. Edit Options:

    • Click the pencil icon next to an option
    • Change the text
    • Click Save
  3. Delete Options:

    • Click the X icon next to an option
    • Confirm deletion
  4. Reorder Options:

    • Drag the handle (⋮⋮) next to each option
    • Drop in the desired position
  5. "Other" Option:

    • Toggle "Allow 'Other' option"
    • Adds a text field for custom answers

Checkbox Questions

Configuration is identical to Multiple Choice, but customers can select multiple answers.

Don't forget: Add "(select all that apply)" to your question text.

  • Perfect for triggering conditional logic

04

Editing Existing Questions

Quick Edit

  1. Find the question in your survey
  2. Click the Edit button (pencil icon)
  3. Make your changes
  4. Click Save

What You Can Edit

Always safe:

  • Question text
  • Description/help text
  • Placeholder text
  • Required/optional status
  • Options (add/remove/reorder)

Edit with caution (if survey has responses):

  • Question type (can corrupt data)
  • Option values in multiple choice (can break reports)
  • Number ranges (can invalidate existing answers)

Cannot edit (if survey has responses):

  • Question type fundamentally (text → multiple choice)

Best Practice: If you need to make major changes to a question with responses, add a new question instead.

05

Duplicating Questions

Save time by copying existing questions:

  1. Click the three dots menu (⋮) on a question
  2. Select Duplicate
  3. A copy appears below the original
  4. Edit the duplicate as needed

When to duplicate:

  • Similar questions with slight variations
  • Reusing the same multiple choice options
  • Creating question sets (rate cleanliness, rate staff, rate service)
06

Deleting Questions

How to Delete

  1. Click the three dots menu (⋮) on the question
  2. Select Delete
  3. Confirm deletion

Warning: Deletion is permanent. All responses to this question will be lost.

When to Delete

Safe to delete:

  • Survey is in Draft with no responses
  • It's a duplicate or test question
  • You're restructuring the survey

Don't delete if:

  • The survey has responses (responses will be lost)
  • Other questions reference it in conditional logic
  • You might need the data later

Better option: Archive the survey and create a new version.

07

Question Settings Panel

Each question has an expandable settings panel:

Display Settings

  • Question Label: Internal name (for your reference)
  • Show Question Number: Display "1.", "2.", etc.
  • Column Width: Full width or half width (for side-by-side layout)

Logic Settings

  • Conditional Logic: Show/hide based on previous answers
  • Skip Logic: Jump to different questions based on answer
  • Piping: Use previous answers in question text

Learn more in Conditional Logic.

Validation Settings

  • Required/Optional: Must be answered to proceed
  • Custom Error Message: Show specific message if validation fails
  • Format Validation: For text fields (email, URL, etc.)

Organizing Questions

Logical Flow

Order questions strategically:

  1. Main score question first (NPS/CSAT/CES)
  2. Follow-up "why" (text question about the score)
  3. Segmentation (which service, which location)
  4. Additional ratings (staff, cleanliness, value)
  5. Demographic/contact info (if needed)
  6. Final open-ended ("Anything else?")

Question Groups

Organize related questions:

  1. Click Add Section Header
  2. Enter a title (e.g., "About Your Visit")
  3. Questions below appear grouped under this header

Reordering

Move questions up or down:

  • Click the up/down arrows next to each question
  • Or drag using the handle (⋮⋮)

Learn more in Reordering Questions.

10

Best Practices

Start Simple

Begin with 2-3 essential questions:

  • Main score question
  • "Why?" (text)
  • "Anything else?" (optional text)

Add more only if you'll use the data.

Test Every Question

Before finalizing:

  • Answer each question yourself
  • Have a colleague test it
  • Verify all options/ranges make sense
  • Check mobile display

Use Clear Labels

For your own reference, use descriptive labels:

  • ❌ "Q1", "Q2", "Q3"
  • ✅ "NPS Score", "Improvement Comments", "Service Type"

Keep It Short

Every question reduces completion rate:

  • 1-3 questions: ~80% completion
  • 4-6 questions: ~60% completion
  • 7-10 questions: ~40% completion
  • 10+ questions: ~20% completion

Focus on quality over quantity.

What's Next?

Now that you can add and edit questions:

  1. Reorder your questions - Organize the flow
  2. Add conditional logic - Create smart surveys
  3. Preview your survey - Test before sending
  4. Customize survey settings - Branding and options
12

Common Questions

Can I edit questions after sending the survey? Yes, but changes only affect new sends. Existing responses remain unchanged.

What happens if I delete a question with responses? All responses to that question are permanently deleted. Archive the survey instead if you need the data.

How many questions should I include? Start with 2-3. Add more only if completion rates stay above 60%.

Can I reuse questions from other surveys? Yes! Duplicate the survey or copy/paste question text and options.
